National Art Honor Society Partners with Roof Above Neighbors

By Upper School Art Teacher, Karrie Matias

Each year, the National Art Honor Society partners with Roof Above Neighbors to create handmade ceramic bowls—one for the artist and one to be donated to the 26th Annual Soup on Sunday | VIA Giving charity event in January, with all proceeds benefiting VIA (formerly Hospice). This community outreach initiative serves as a meaningful bridge, connecting students with individuals who have experienced less fortunate circumstances and fostering empathy through shared creative experiences.

The partnership goes far beyond the making of bowls; it is about building relationships, honoring stories, and closing social gaps through art.

One particularly touching example was the connection formed with Tony, a community member who wished to create a bowl for his expecting daughter. Deeply moved by his story, students Maggie Mast and Anne Wyche took it upon themselves to carefully glaze his bowl and ensure it was returned to him before Christmas—an act of compassion that reflects the true spirit of this collaboration.

Following the event, Maggie and Anne presented this workshop experience at Upper School's Morning Meeting, sharing not only the process but also the personal impact it had on them. They spoke thoughtfully about how working alongside community members deepened their understanding of service, dignity, and human connection. Their reflection demonstrated how this experience extended beyond the studio, shaping their perspective and reinforcing the power of art as a tool for empathy, leadership, and meaningful change.
