How Older Students Take Part in Big Saturday

Spring is here and our Lower School is full of anticipation for one of Country Day's biggest traditions: Big Saturday, a day filled with rides, games, entertainment, and lots of food. While Middle School and Upper School students naturally age out of the carnival atmosphere many still take part in this all-school community event. The Parents' Association is grateful for the many ways our older students continue to stay involved and serve as role models for younger students.

For instance, Middle School students participating in the spring musical may be asked to perform at the Talent Show. Families running booths at the International Food Hall often have their children help. There are even Middle School students participating in the Big Saturday Art Sale! And, of course, many Middle Schoolers come to Big Saturday to enjoy the rides, the food, and time with their friends.

Upper School students look forward to Big Saturday as well, but not in the same way as students from the other divisions. Students volunteer to run game booths; an activity they get involved in largely through their participation in clubs. Aquilifer and National Honor Society members make up the largest group of students working Big Saturday booths. Meghan Zepsa, faculty advisor to the Aquilifer Club, says her students plan and look forward to participating every year. Not only do the students receive service hours for their participation, but they also have lots of fun.

Upper School student Shelby Eliasek is participating in the Big Saturday Art Sale for her second year. After selling her first painting in sixth grade, Shelby says she was hooked and decided to sell some of her work at the Art Sale her freshman year. After taking rigorous AP studio art classes her sophomore and junior years, Shelby says she had so much work that she thought she would sell again this year as an endcap to her Country Day experience. Shelby says, “it is always so much fun!”

Regardless of grade, there is fun for every Country Day student at Big Saturday!

Interested in going to Big Saturday? All are welcome!
