This week, our Upper School took a collective break from classes for two days to host the Special Olympics Mecklenburg County Spring Games. This definitive Country Day experience has been happening on Cannon Campus since 1984. Students are buddied up with athletes to support events, facilitate arts and crafts, and bring overall joy to the participants and their families.Students walk away feeling inspired by dedication and abilities of the athletes.

It was SO much fun! I loved meeting all the athletes and seeing their faces light up! I wish we had Special Olympics more often!"

While Special Olympics is one of Country Day’s most visible partnerships, we have a long history of giving back (going back to the 1940s when students collected scrap metal and sold war stamps). The participating organizations have changed over time, but the commitment to the greater Charlotte community and beyond persists. Other school community partners include:
- A Child’s Place
- American Red Cross
- Berryhill Elementary
- Big Brothers Big Sisters
- Carolina Raptor Center
- Crisis Assistance
- Friendship Gardens and Trays
- Goodwill
- Habitat for Humanity
- Loaves and Fishes
- The Learning Collaborative
- Mecklenberg County Storm Water Services
- Monarch Butterfly Network
- Our Bridge
- Refugee Support Service of the Carolinas
- Sardis Nursing Home
- Trout in the Classroom
- YMCA Women’s Shelter
