Announcing Our Next Head of School: Tara Christie Kinsey

On May 22, 2024 Charlotte Country Day School Board Chair Bill Zimmern '95 announced the naming of our next Head of School, Dr. Tara Christie Kinsey.

From Bill Zimmern:

Dear Country Day community,

Dr. Tara Christie Kinsey

Following a diligent and thorough national search process, I am delighted to share that Dr. Tara Christie Kinsey has been selected unanimously by the Board of Trustees as the next Head of School of Charlotte Country Day School. Tara will succeed the current Interim Head of School David Mancos in July 2025.

A relational, accomplished leader and experienced educator, since 2015 Tara has served as the Head of School at The Hewitt School, an independent school for girls in New York City. Previously, Tara was Associate Dean of the College and Campus Life as well as Senior Associate Director of Capital Giving at Princeton University. In addition to teaching occasionally while at Hewitt, Tara previously taught and coached at The Peddie School at the independent school level and at Emory University, Georgetown University, Oxford University, and Princeton University at the collegiate level.

A lifelong educator, learner, coach, and leader, Tara has effectively nurtured healthy relations with constituents, built consensus for change, and acted resolutely when difficult decisions were necessary. In the years ahead, our school will benefit from Tara’s deep experience and commitment to the expansion of students’ confidence, capacities, and sense of purpose in forging a better world. She has led fundraising campaigns and major campus renovation projects and understands the importance of student mental health and wellness in the context of a competitive, high-achieving academic environment. As a former Division I athlete and a lover of music, Tara is passionate about the student experience in all its forms. She is an impressive writer, and a thought leader in the educational space, and has guided Hewitt’s notable diversity, equity, and inclusivity efforts.

Tara has observed, "From the moment I stepped onto Charlotte Country Day’s campus, I felt warmly welcomed, intellectually engaged, and genuinely inspired to help unlock the extraordinary potential of a school which has a long history of groundbreaking firsts and which is now poised to write its exciting next chapter. I am honored and delighted to become Country Day’s next head of school and to work alongside such extraordinarily talented, passionate, curious, committed, and kind members of this very special school community."

Tara’s demonstrated decision-making and collaborative spirit will position our school for excellence in the years ahead and only amplify the great work and legacy of our previous leaders. Simply put, our school is ready for the invigorating spirit and inspiring leadership that we firmly believe Tara will instill in our school community in the years ahead. We look forward to welcoming Tara and her husband Matt, daughter Charlotte, son Sam, and Otis, their five-month-old black lab.

I would like to personally thank the members of the Head of School search committee for their consistent commitment over the last several months. In particular, I would like to thank Kandi Deitemeyer and Stanton McCullough for their leadership. As search committee co-chairs, they worked through nights and weekends with Mark Davis, Daryl Ford, and Karen Whitaker from Carney Sandoe to thoughtfully prepare the position description, set up and administer thorough, diligent interviews and careful, in-depth referencing to ensure a timely, well-managed process for our search committee and Board as a whole. We all owe them considerable gratitude for their efforts. Job well done!

Though Tara’s tenure as Head of School will commence in July 2025, we anticipate an active transition period over the next year during which time we expect there to be a significant number of opportunities for community members to meet Tara and for her to get to know our school in a way that allows for a seamless start next summer. I know Tara is eager to engage with and learn from our faculty, staff, parents, students, and alumni. Please participate and share your views on what makes the Country Day community such a vibrant, warm place and how we can seek to build an even more successful future for the school together. More details will be shared early next school year. For more information about Tara and our search process, please visit charlottecountryday.org/about/our-leadership/head-of-school.

With appreciation and excitement for the road ahead,

Bill Zimmern '95
