On September 25, 2024, more than 100 Country Day students of all ages, parents, and faculty and staff participated in the 19th annual "Create to Donate" Soup Bowls for Hospice event benefiting VIA.
Participants created, glazed, and donated more than 150 clay bowls. During the school year sculpture students will visit “neighbors” at Roof Above to create additional bowls for the cause. The bowls and local artisan pottery are for sale during the 25th Annual Soup on Sunday event on January 26, 2025.
"It’s hard to believe that almost two decades have passed since former Country Day parent Kay Ethridge suggested this creative collaboration between Country Day and Jinny Hargrave owner of Carolina Clay Connection, to raise money for VIA (formally Hospice and Palliative Care, Charlotte Region)," said Karrie Matias, Country Day Upper School visual arts teacher and coordinator of the "Create to Donate" event. "That first year was a great success, and each year since then the event has grown, both in the number of participants and the beauty of the ceramic bowls they have produced. These soup bowls are a big attraction at the wonderful Soup on Sunday event."
Special thanks to our Friends of the Arts (FOTA) volunteers and Carolina Clay Connections for donating the clay.
