Suzie Pignetti, one of the most influential figures in North Carolina high school volleyball, has been inducted into the NCISAA Hall of Fame, recognizing a career defined by excellence, innovation, and lasting impact at both Charlotte Country Day School and Charlotte Latin.
Pignetti’s coaching legacy began at Country Day, where she quickly established herself as a trailblazer in girls’ athletics. Serving from 1974 to 1997, she led the Buccaneers’ volleyball program to 6 state championships, 14 conference championships, and 17 first-place season finishes. She helped build one of the earliest sustained volleyball powers in North Carolina.
Pignetti served as Country Day's first Girls' Athletic Director from 1974 to 1980, one of only three women athletic directors in Mecklenburg County at the time. During this formative era for girls’ athletics, her visionary leadership expanded opportunities for female student-athletes and played a defining role in shaping the growth of the sport within the NCISAA. Her impact was formally recognized with her induction into Country Day’s Athletics Hall of Honor Class of 2025, where she was celebrated for elevating programs on the national stage, spanning generations.
In addition to her success in volleyball, Pignetti also coached softball at Country Day, guiding the program to 5 state titles and further demonstrating her versatility and influence across multiple sports. Across both programs, her teams were defined not only by consistent success but also by discipline, culture-building, and a foundation of excellence that continued to influence future generations of Buccaneer athletes.
Pignetti departed Country Day to kickstart the volleyball program at Butler High School before she continued her remarkable career at Charlotte Latin School, where her success reached historic levels. During her tenure, Pignetti led the Hawks to 11 consecutive conference championships and 9 straight state titles, building one of the most dominant volleyball dynasties in NCISAA history. Her teams not only excelled competitively but also earned consistent academic recognition, reflecting her emphasis on both athletic and personal development. Pignetti was inducted into Charlotte Latin’s Hall of Fame in 2020.
Across a 35-year career, Pignetti amassed a record of 745–150, the most wins by a volleyball coach in North Carolina history. She was named National High School Coach of the Year by the American Volleyball Coaches Association in 2012 and earned multiple regional Coach of the Year honors, further cementing her reputation as one of the sport’s premier leaders.
Beyond championships and accolades, Pignetti’s influence extended deeply into the community. She played a key role in developing club volleyball in the region and mentored countless athletes who went on to compete at the collegiate level. Her commitment to service, including founding a major fundraising tournament for breast cancer research, highlighted her dedication beyond the court.
Her induction into the NCISAA Hall of Fame stands as a fitting tribute to a career that transformed not only volleyball but girls’ and women’s sports across North Carolina.
