Lawson Named New Softball Program Head

Country Day Director of Athletics, Abe Wehmiller, has announced the hiring of Michaela Lawson as the Bucs’ new Softball Program Head and Head Varsity Softball Coach. Lawson recently relocated to the Charlotte area from her home state of Colorado, where she founded and ran a softball training program, 8K Fastpitch, and coached both high school and travel softball.

“After engaging with players and parents, it became apparent that Country Day embodies a strong sense of commitment, family, and heart with its softball and athletics programs,” Lawson said. “I am excited to help expand on an already strong foundation and create a legacy-worthy program that many can enjoy in the years to come.”

Michaela Lawson has joined the Country Day Athletics staff in the role of Softball Program Head/Head Varsity Softball Coach.

Lawson is a 2010 graduate of Francis Marion University (Florence, SC), where she was a four-year starter for the Patriots as a pitcher and an infielder. She was a Division II All-American and left Francis Marion six different program pitching records to her credit: pitching appearances (151), wins (92), complete games (108), shutouts (25), innings pitched (897.2), and strikeouts (755).

She has coached with two different high school programs in Colorado, most recently as the varsity pitchers and catchers coach at Thunder Ridge High School near her hometown of Littleton. Her 8K Fastpitch business offered individual instruction in hitting, pitching, and strength and conditioning and included a unique online coaching platform. She holds a National Academy of Sports Medicine (NASM) certification in youth exercise and performance enhancement.

“Throughout this process, Michaela struck me as someone who is deeply interested in getting to know our school, our program, and our student-athletes,” Wehmiller said. “She certainly brings great softball credentials to this endeavor, but is also keen on understanding how she can best apply her knowledge of the game in our unique circumstances. That will serve her well in this role.”

Lawson has been on campus for preseason workouts for the past month and will start her work with the full team when the spring season launches on February 16. The Bucs' first game is scheduled for March 2 at Gaston Christian.
