Merger with Carmel Academy

Carmel Academy

In September of 1980, Carmel Academy merged with Country Day, and the Green Rea Road campus becomes home of the Middle School. Many teachers who taught at Carmel stayed to teach Middle School for Country Day, making it a stronger school with so many talented and committed teachers.

  • Carmel Academy opened in 1971 with just one building in place, Rea Hall. Constructed on 25 acres donated by the Zeb Milton Rea family, by 1973 the campus included another classroom building, a cafeteria, a library, and a gymnasium.
  • In June 1980, the Middle School library is named in honor of William H. Dougherty, former Carmel Academy board member.
  • The Middle School is named the Bissell Campus in 1992 in honor of Sara ’56 and Smoky Bissell, for their 25 years of volunteer support and financial leadership to Country Day.
