Writing
The Young Author
Rising grades 4–6. July 28–August 1, 9:00 a.m. to noon. $170.
This is a camp for those who love novels and may want to write someday themselves. During the week you examine authors like J.K. Rowling, Isaac Asimov, and Dr. Seuss. You spend your time writing short stories, poems, and even a newspaper review of the short story that you wrote.
Express Yourself as a Writer: Be an Artist Using Your Words
Rising grades 5–8. July 7–11, 9:00 a.m. to noon. $170.
Come to a real Writer’s Workshop where your creativity shines in pieces of writing you never dreamed you could create. Tap your creative vein of gold through daily journaling and other activities. The week culminates in a Writer’s Café where you and your fellow writers read poetry, stories, and essays, or sing original songs. Guests are welcome to listen and enjoy coffee drinks and snacks. Catherine Fortin is a certified English teacher and has participated in the National Writer’s Project training and Artist’s Way creative writing training.
Periodical Players: A Camp for Young Jounalists
Rising grades 6–8. June 16–20, 9:00 a.m. to noon. $170.
Do you love reading magazines that cover fashion, nutrition, celebrity scoops, book reviews, and the like? Do we have the summer experience for YOU! How would you like to be the editor in-chief of your very own magazine? You create, research, design, and write articles, all while having tons of fun!
Write On!
Rising grades 5–7. July 28–August 1, 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. $165.
Need help or practice with your writing? Write On! This camp combines conventional writing assignments (poetry, paragraphs, essays) with fun summer topics. During the week, you are out and around writing about nature, vacation, summer memories, your favorite books, and movies. You also spend time each day playing word games to improve your vocabulary, spelling, and grammar. What could be more fun? Join us this week and Write On!
Introduction to 9th Grade Writing
Rising grade 9. July 28–August 1, 9:00 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. $165.
Get a head start on Upper School English at Country Day with this one-week writing seminar. The class, taught by 9th grade English teacher Stephanie Cave, reviews the basic elements of composition and focuses on our specific 9th grade writing expectations, which include: The Seven Musts of Formal Ninth Grade Writing, proper essay format, and issues of style. Using English Summer Reading, students practice various kinds of writing including the personal narrative, formal essays, and writing in response to literature. This class is for all students who need to practice and improve their writing, or want to know what to expect from English class in the fall.
