CCDS in the Summer
Science
Junior Space Camp
Rising pre-K–grade 2. July 7–11, 9:00 a.m. to noon. $170.
This week introduces children to the first rockets into space, astronauts, trips to the moon, space shuttles, and our exploration of neighboring planets. Many fun crafts and out-of-this-world activities inspire our scientists of the future!
Edible Science
Rising K–grade 2. July 21–25, 9:00 a.m. to noon. $170.
This week combines eating, culinary arts, and some of the basic principles of physics and chemistry in a fun, hands-on class. Campers learn chemistry lab protocol, kitchen and food-prep safety, and keep a personal journal of experiments and discoveries. You make ice cream in a bag, amazing egg-speriments, fizzing candy, and much more. Be prepared for funny smells, yucky textures, and some gross grub. But don’t worry, tasting is always optional and our instructor is a trained professional!!
MythBreakers!
Session I: Rising grades 1–3. July 7–11, 9:00 a.m. to noon. Session II: July 7–11. Rising grades 4–6, 12:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. $170 each session.
What happens when you put Mentos into a diet coke? How can a paper rocket really fly? There are so many things that puzzle the mind. This camp will examine and study why things pop, fizzle, spin, and sometimes even explode.
Flight Academy
Session I: Rising grades 1–3. June 16–20, 9:00 a.m. to noon. Session II: Rising grades 4–6. July 14–18, 9:00 a.m. to noon. $165 each session.
Campers have a hands-on experience exploring how different types of aircraft and other objects fly. Basic principles of flight and aerodynamics are investigated by building airplanes, testing them in wind tunnels, and building a hovercraft and a balloon copter. Investigate how early “pilots” navigated while building a sextant and sundial. Campers also take home a rubber band-powered airplane, various paper airplane designs, balloon copters, boomerangs, and mini Frisbee. End the week by putting together everything we learn by building an intermediate level Estes rocket.
Secret Agent Lab
Session I: Rising grades 1–3. June 16–20, 9:00 a.m. to noon. Session II: Rising grades 4–6. July 28–August 1. $165 each session.
“It’s elementary Watson” for children to become super sleuths to solve a “crime!” Use techniques from forensic science to fill the shoes of a detective in this fun-filled “who dunnit” program. Build a detective tool kit and use it to collect and analyze evidence from crime scenes. The “un” usual suspects are narrowed down as the week progresses until we solve the crime and bring the camp to a sweet conclusion!
Red Hot Robots
Rising grades 3–6. Session I: June 23–27, 9:00 a.m. to noon. Session II: July 21–25, 9:00 a.m. to noon. $175 each session.
Join us for a week of thrills with amazing robots. Explore how robots are used in our world and have fun experimenting with super cool, sound-sensing robots, line-tracking robots, and amphibious robots. Young scientists discover the science of electronic circuits and how robots use sensors to explore things around them. Build your very own sound-activated robot and test out your new friend on an obstacle course before taking it home at the end of the week.
Earth Explorations
Rising pre-K–grade 1. July 7–11, 9:00 a.m. to noon. $165.
This is a great opportunity for inquisitive young minds to uncover the hidden stories in rocks, sand, and fossils. Discover the world around us, from oceans to mountains and volcanoes to earthquakes. Have fun sifting for “gemstones” and uncovering dinosaur bones. Learn about the awesome forces of nature that shape our world and learn what fossils and shells tell us about the creatures of the earth. Take-home projects are created each day as we let imaginations soar.
Blast Off To Space
Session I: Rising grades 1–3. July 14–18, 9:00 a.m. to noon. Session II: Rising grades 4–6. July 28–August 1, 9:00 a.m. to noon. $165 each session.
Budding rocket scientists explore the fundamentals of rocketry and space travel. Learn about outer space as we look at the stars and solar system. Work on projects to take home including a simple telescope, a propeller-powered space orbiter, and a fully functional rocket. Build and launch different types of rockets during the week. On the last day of camp, launch the solid fuel rocket you built into space and watch it return to earth by parachute before taking it home to show your friends.
Sizzling Summer Science!
Rising grades 2–4. July 7–11, 9:00 a.m. to noon. $165.
Children discover that science is all around us…from nature and chemicals to buildings and sports! A different theme is explored each day as you discover in fun ways how science applies to each topic. Decipher secret codes and build ultraviolet light detectors to detect the “hidden” light from the sun. Explore the animal kingdom and have fun experimenting with light and colors. The world never looks quite the same after attending this camp.
I Got Slimed!
Rising grades 3–6. June 16–20, 9:00 a.m. to noon. $170.
Learn and experiment with the yuckiest things on earth! What is quicksand? How about lava from a volcano? What is that disgusting green thing in your cereal bowl that you left in your room? This week you explore some of the yuckiest wonders of the world. Suit and ties or dresses are not recommended in this camp!
Harry Potter Meets Luke Skywalker! (NOTE: SESSION IS FULL)
Rising grades 3–5. June 23–27, 9:00 a.m. to noon. $170.
Potions, lasers, and weird aliens—everything magical and mystical happens this week. Watch a ping pong ball stay airborne, make your own potion right out of a Hogwart’s spell book, make your own Jedi laser sword or magical broom. The only thing absolutely not allowed this week are muggles!
How “Stuff” Works!
Rising grades 3–6. July 14–18, 9:00 a.m. to noon. $170.
How does the picture get on a television? What makes a clock chime and bong? How does a watch become waterproof? These are just a few questions you address and learn about as you unravel these mind puzzles called life. In addition to these things, campers are invited to bring in mind twisters of their own and try to stump the class.
Those Crazy, Nutty Contraptions!
Rising grades 5–8. July 21–25, 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. $195.
Remember the game “mouse trap?” How about Doc from Back to the Future (flux capacitor ring a bell)? This week, unleash the zany scientist loose that lives inside of you! This camp is seriously insane! Each day you present a challenge and the camper who comes up with the kookiest way to solve the problem is the winner!
Turn On the Light!
Rising grades 6–8. July 7–11, 9:00 a.m. to noon. $180.
Ever wonder why the lights come on with the flip of a switch? In this camp, you study electricity and the fabulous inventions that came because of it. Get electricity from lemons and learn how batteries work. Make a simple flashlight or burglar alarm all because you came to this camp and turned on the lights!
