Journeys to the Past

Pirates Cove
Rising K–grade 2. July 14–18, 9:00 a.m. to noon. $170.

About 300 years ago, bands of desperate and cruel men sailed the high seas in search of contraband treasure and ill-gotten gains. Famous pirate captains have captured our imagination, and countless more have come to life in poems, plays, and tales such as Treasure Island and Peter Pan. Young Buccaneers learn how to read maps and to chart them, make simple compasses, learn the principles of navigation using the wind and the stars, build a ghostly galleon, and hoist the Jolly Roger. Legends of notorious pirates, many of whom came ashore in North Carolina, are told and you also create your own pirate characters and keep a swashbuckling journal of your adventures on the rough and rugged seas.

Dinosaur Dig
Rising pre-K–grade 2. July 28–August 1, 9:00 a.m. to noon. $170.
Explore monstrous creatures from beyond the mists of time—some small, some huge, all strange and scary. Campers go on a real “dig” to find “relics” of dinosaurs and then try to reconstruct the skeletons of imaginary beasts. You investigate, classify, and even name new imaginary discoveries. Campers learn to measure, compare, estimate, and extrapolate using simple math, yardsticks, and graph paper. Learn what paleontologists and archaeologists do, and where they go. Simple timelines of pre-history, as well as some easy Latin vocabulary roots, scientific terms, and mapmaking are introduced as our young campers record events and discoveries in their expedition journals.

Discovering Reptiles and Amphibians!
Rising pre-K–grade 2. July 14–18, 9:00 a.m. to noon. $170.
Come visit the world of reptiles and amphibians, both local and worldwide. Learn where these herps live, what they eat, and how they survive in nature. Crafts, games, and live show-and-tell are part of every class.

Genealogy
Rising grades 3–5. July 21–25, 9:00 a.m. to noon. $195.
Investigate where you came from, what your family crest is, and all kinds of other information. Learn about your country of origin as you research the past! Have any famous relatives? Maybe you can find out!
