Computer Camps
For rising grades 2 to adult
Web Master
Rising grades 2–5. June 23–27, 9:00 a.m. to noon. $170.
Would you like to become a Web master? Open the doors of the Internet to find a new, exciting world filled with your favorite activities and hobbies. Charlotte Country Day computer science teacher Erin Springfield teaches you to download graphics, create hyperlinks, manipulate photos and clip art, and much more. Experiment with some of the newest digital technology including digital cameras and a scanner. Bring in your own photos or download pictures from the Internet to create your own multimedia presentation full of pictures, music, and movie clips. Create a scrapbook of your favorite things to share with family and friends.
The Web
Rising grades 3–6. July 21–25, 9:00 a.m. to noon. $170.
The Internet can be a wonderful scary place. Campers learn basic Web design, software installation and, most importantly, Web security. We teach them what not to download, how to keep their computer secure, and show them a computer infected by a virus and the damage it causes. Finally, a camp that educates students on a subject too often overlooked or ignored.
Keyboarding for Kids
Rising grades 4–6. June 16–20, 9:00 a.m. to noon. $170. All materials included.
Master the most important skill of the millennium in a keyboarding class specially designed for young computer users and taught by Charlotte Country Day School computer science teacher Karen Sullivan. Using the Herzog Keyboarding Method, which introduces letters in alphabetical order, students learn proper keystrokes. Accuracy and speed are emphasized to increase student efficiency. Practice is combined with fun keyboarding games to reinforce this important and useful skill. Windows software is used for the class.
Web 2.0
Rising grades 5–9. Session I: June 16–20. Session II: July 7–11, both sessions 9:00 a.m. to noon. $170.
So what is “Web 2.0” anyway? Come discover all the free resources and software on the Web! You discover new technology that allows you to interact with the Web in ways you never imagined. Here are just a few of the Web 2.0 applications we use: Flickr, Delicious, EduBlog, GCast, ScrapBlog…and many, many more.
Back to Basics
Rising grades 6–Adult. June 16–20, 9:00 a.m. to noon. $170.
Get back to the basics! Computer science teacher, Erin Springfield teaches you the basic hardware and software fundamentals including word processing skills (how to set tabs, create footnotes, bibliographies, etc.), spreadsheet skills (creating charts, using formulas), publishing skills (using MS Publisher) and how to create presentations using PowerPoint. She’ll also go over the essential skills needed in maintaining your hardware (how to defrag, run antivirus software, back up your hard drive, etc.).
Photoshop
Rising grades 6–Adult. June 16–20, 12:30 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. $155.
Computer science teacher Erin Springfield welcomes you to the exciting world of Adobe Photoshop, a powerful application you can use to create and edit images. Tricks of the trade once available only to professional photographers and printers can now be at your fingertips, making it possible to achieve impressive results at your desktop. In this class, you learn to adjust images, edit image flaws (red eye), use patterns, create backgrounds, and enhance your own photos with toning, shadows, or frames. You learn to scan photos, download images from the Internet, and use digital cameras. The opportunities are endless.
Web Design
Rising grades 5–12. June 23–27, 12:30 p.m. to 3:00 p.m.. $155.
Want to be a Web design master? Computer science teacher Erin Springfield teaches you Web design aesthetics, how to import and create your own graphics, how to add sound to your Web page, how to use a scanner and digital camera to add extra pizzazz, and much, much more. You learn everything from HTML to Flash and FrontPage. (Web page hosting provided by CCDS only for the duration of the class.)
