Mickey Mouse and Minnie, Goofy, Pluto, Donald Duck, and more fill your portfolio by the end of the week. Campers also create decorative crafts like Mickey Mouse ears, picture frames, sock puppets, door hangers, and masks. No prior drawing lessons are required.

Make a mystical unicorn or a flying pig. During this week campers are introduced to the wonderful and messy world of clay (do not worry, we clean them up before they come home!). Students learn how to throw on the wheel, progressing from the basic cylinder to more subtle and interesting shapes of vessels and bowls. Individual vision and creativity is always encouraged and students may pursue personal projects if they wish, creating sculptural forms and whimsical decorative vessels like teapots, birdhouses, and more. John Yates, an expert craftsman with more than 50 years of woodworking experience, gives each student hands-on instructions for making a desk shelf unit, a bluebird house, a race car, and a footstool. These projects are designed to teach the basics of woodworking: tool safety (learning that tools are not toys); measuring (learning scale, rule, feet, inches, and fractions); abrasives (learning how to use sandpaper); fasteners (learning there is a nail for every application); painting (learning about wood sealers, and oil-based and water-based paints); and tool maintenance (learning how to clean and keep tools for a lifetime of use and enjoyment).

Mr. Yates has fun with students while they learn the fundamentals of using tools to craft creations for themselves or gifts for others. Students should bring an old shirt or smock to paint in. All other materials are included.

Art A-La-Carte
Rising grades 1–2. June 16–20, 9:00 a.m. to noon. $170.
Inspired by the impressionistic art of Renoir, students create a “relief in collage” incorporating papers, clay, fabrics, and craft items. Then, make a pair of moccasins adding your own creative design using paints, beads, shells, feathers, or jewels. The fun continues when you create a few more “art-tastic” projects with oil pastels, dry granulated wax, and Model Magic Clay. Dress to mess, and please bring a smock or dad’s old shirt on the first day of class.

Wild Kingdom
Rising grades 2–3. June 23–27, 9:00 a.m. to noon. $170.
Animals and reptiles are so cool, especially wild ones! Students create a clay mug incorporating a wild animal or reptile as part of the mug. Let’s not forget about dinosaurs! Students use paper mâché and paint to create a really cool or maybe a really scary dinosaur. Other projects include making a tinted photo of a wild animal with fun accessories, creating a magnificent reptile relief using paint and chalk, and using fabric paint and embellishments to create a wild animal or reptile on an “Aussie” hat (which you definitely need when you are out in the wild!). Dress to mess, and please bring a smock or dad’s old shirt on the first day of class.

Edible Art
Rising grades 2–3. July 7–11, 9:00 a.m. to noon. $170.
Students create art that is edible, as well as creating art in the traditional sense. Some of the edible creations are painting a picture similar to Van Gogh’s Sunflowers (using chocolate and food color), and making popcorn teddy bears, a pouty pepper, a yummy lizard (using cereal, chocolate, and butterscotch chips), and chocolate tortoises. Traditional art projects include designing and making a mask in the style of the Renaissance artist Giuseppe Arcimboldo (not edible), and using colored pencil and pastel to create a beautiful still life.

Students have fun working with a variety of medias such as Model Magic Clay, tempera paint, colored pencils, crayons, markers, and fabric paint. We read a story and the students make their own storybook with pictures (no writing unless the students choose to do that on their own). Students also make a wonderful still life collage, create a gorgeous cracked wax resist project, use Model Magic Clay to make colorful fish, and use fabric paint and other objects to decorate a smock. Dress to mess, and please bring a smock or one of dad’s old shirts on the first day of camp.

Rising grades 3–4. July 21–25, 9:00 a.m. to noon. $170.
Students learn about movie scenery and movie props as they create scenes from a Disney movie using paint, cardboard, and a variety of tools and materials for these projects. Students also learn to draw some of the characters and sculpt a character or movie prop. The last day of camp, students have popcorn as they watch the movie. Dress to mess, and please bring a smock or dad’s old shirt on the first day of class.

The Art of Design
Rising grades 4–5. July 28–August 1, 9:00 a.m. to noon. $170.
Let your creative side soar as you design your own T-shirt by splattering colorful designs, and stamping fun shapes or letters, or you draw and paint a famous work of art like the Mona Lisa or Sunflowers. Design and make a really cool disposable dress, design and create a purse, and make earrings and bracelets. Students first sketch their designs, and then make the project just like a real designer!
