CCDS in the Summer

Middle School Programs
Four Weeks: June 16–July 11

In the Middle School programs, tuition for a single course is $330. However, the total tuition is $610 if a student enrolls in any two of the following courses: (1) Composition and Reading Skills, (2) Grammar and Vocabulary Study, (3) Math 78, or (4) Pre-Algebra.

Composition and Reading Skills
Rising grades 7–8. 8:15 a.m. to 10:15 a.m. $330.
Recommended for students who need more work and review in basic writing skills to develop proficiency in paragraph writing and the mechanics of composition as well as reading comprehension and critical reasoning.

Grammar and Vocabulary Study
Rising grades 7–8. 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. $330.
This class reviews the mechanics of grammar and basic grammatical rules and principles as well as vocabulary study through various readings to expand a student’s vocabulary.  Emphasis is placed on use rather than memorization.

Pre-Algebra 
Rising grades 8–9. 8:15 a.m. to 10:15 p.m. $330.
Recommended for students going into Algebra I, this course reviews integers, order of operations, evaluating algebraic expressions, monomials, polynomials, solving and graphing equations, and inequalities.

Math 78 
Rising grades 7–8. 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. $330.
This class is designed to provide a solid foundation in basic math by strengthening fundamental arithmetic skills. It reviews computational skills and such topics as percentages, ratios, fractions, exponents, square roots, probability, circumferences, perimeters, areas, and volumes.

 

Middle School Skills Courses

Sheffield Communication’s Advanced Reading Course
Rising grades 7–9. June 19 and 20, 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 a.m. $270 (Full payment due with registration).
This intensive two-day course is designed to help average and above-average students increase their reading rates and improve comprehension. Confidence in reading skills is essential if students are to succeed in their secondary schoolwork. The course includes: (1) building reading speed, (2) adjusting reading rate to the content of the material, (3) improving comprehension and concentration, and (4) learning techniques for better retention and memory. Students build from their present reading ability and progress at their own pace. “It has been of great value to me, and I would recommend this course for everyone” is typical of student comments.

Introduction to 9th Grade Writing
Rising 9th grade only. July 28–August 1, 9:00 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. (Full payment due with registration).
Get a head start on Upper School English with this one-week writing seminar. The class, taught by 9th grade English teacher Stephanie Cave, reviews the basic elements of composition and focuses on the specific 9th grade writing expectations which include: The Seven Musts of Formal Ninth Grade Writing, proper essay format, and issues of style. Using the English Summer Reading, students practice various kinds of writing including the personal narrative, formal essays, and writing in response to literature. This class is for all students who need to practice and improve their writing or want to know what to expect from English class in the fall.
