The relatively new sport of lacrosse got its start at Country Day from Coach Gene Reilly in the 1986– 1987 season. Initially, the sport was not recognized by the state association as less than eight independent schools in the NCISAA fielded a team. For the 97 season, the state held its first tournament and the Bucs finished second to Durham Academy. It would not be the last time these two teams would meet in a final. For the next seven years the championship event was won by either Country Day or Durham Academy. The Bucs have earned eight state titles under the direction of head coach Brad Touma and finished as runner up seven times.
