Student Life

Students in grades five through eight are beginning to explore their interests more deeply. The Middle School offers students a variety of school programs and extra-curricular activities to hone their talents, promote responsibility and good decision-making, and build relationships.

Academic Competitions
Students take part in competitions within the school and with other schools, including Battle of the Books, a speech contest, spelling and geography bees, the Math Club, and science fair.

Fine Arts
Students may participate in a fall play and spring musical, and several functions are held each year for students to display their instrumental, vocal, dance, and artistic talents.

School In the Woods and School at the Beach
Early in the school year, all fifth, sixth, and seventh graders travel to a camp with their teachers for several days to take part in a blend of activities that touch upon academics, team building, and character development. In eighth grade, students take part in School at the Beach in the spring. Students are involved in using the resources of coastal North Carolina.

Clubs and Activities
Students may join the school newspaper staff, the Cultural Diversity Club, Key Club, and the literary magazine. The Middle School also has an elected student council, an honor council, peer counseling, and National Junior Honor Society.

Sports
Team sports begin in seventh grade, including football, soccer, basketball, swimming, wrestling, golf, cross-country, baseball, and lacrosse for boys, and field hockey, volleyball, soccer, basketball, softball, swimming, cross-country, and cheerleading for girls.

Social Life
Throughout the year, students take part in school-sponsored events to build school spirit and establish stronger relationships, such as Spirit Days, bowling parties, pool parties, and dances for seventh and eighth graders.

Community Service Projects
An important part of student life in the Middle School is community service projects.
