Sports Medicine
Country Day has a commitment to athletic training that is rarely found
at the secondary school level. We have four certified athletic trainers
to cover 16 sports and more than 60 teams at the middle school, junior
varsity, and varsity levels. Our athletic trainers operate and maintain
training rooms on both campuses. The 2,100 square foot OLeary
Sports Medicine Center at the Cannon Campus is comparable to some of
the nation's best college facilities.
When the Bucs compete, a certified athletic trainer is always on duty
to evaluate injuries and provide immediate and follow up care. Country
Day athletes have the luxury of completing individualized rehabilitation
programs in-house under the supervision of our certified athletic trainers.
Rehabilitation is closely coordinated with physicians and physical therapists.
Before an athlete is returned to play, the strength and conditioning
coach becomes involved in modifying any team-related conditioning programs.
Athletic trainers also educate the athletic community about nutrition,
healthy living, first aid, CPR, and the effects of harmful substances.
The sports medicine program also has student athletic trainers assisting
with the everyday operations of the athletic training room and on-field
practice and game coverage.
Sports Medicine Curriculum
Charlotte Country Day offers many opportunities for students to advance
their knowledge in the field of Sports Medicine. As freshmen, they may
take Concepts of Physical Fitness as part of the PE curriculum.
Students may also take Basic Athletic Training which includes American Red Cross certification in First Aid and CPR with Automated External Defibrillator (AED), as an elective at any
grade level. The science department offers Anatomy and Physiology for
Sports Medicine and plans an additional course, Biomechanics of Sports Performance, in
the near future. Students wishing to gain practical experience in the
field may participate in our Student Athletic Training Program. There
are many internship opportunities for seniors including orthopedics,
physical therapy, athletic training, and exercise physiology.
For Visiting Teams
Charlotte Country Day School welcomes our visiting sports teams.
- For athletic teams traveling without an athletic trainer, our
Sports Medicine department is available, if asked, for emergency
care and basic first aid.
- Our staff is available to tape athletes if needed. Please notify
the training room prior to arrival if there are any athletes who
require special needs.
- We ask that visiting teams bring drinking cups or water bottles
and supply tape or padding material that may be needed.
- Each bench will be supplied with water and injury ice. In addition,
a receptacle for biohazardous waste is available.
Training Rooms
Our training rooms are equipped with the following modalities:
- Ice
- Hydrocollator packs
- Compression unit
- Paraffin bath
- Extremity whirlpool
- E-Stim
- Ultrasound
If a team is not traveling with an athletic trainer, please have
a physician or school athletic trainer call with specific parameters
should an athlete require the use of a modality. Without specific
instruction, we cannot provide treatment other than basic heat and
ice.
