International Baccalaureate (IB) School

Charlotte Country Day School is proud to be the first school in North Carolina selected as an International Baccalaureate (IB) school, allowing us to offer the most rigorous pre-university diploma program in the world. Country Day became an International Baccalaureate member in 1992. Today, there are more than 2,000 authorized IB schools in 204 countries. At CCDS, program participation has more than tripled in the past five years and approximately 25% of the junior and senior classes are enrolled in the program.

Balanced Curriculum
The IB curriculum is designed to establish a basic standard for international education and focuses on educating the "whole person." The curriculum provides juniors and seniors with a balanced education, promotes geographical and cultural mobility, and emphasizes international understanding through shared academic experiences.

Students who successfully complete this comprehensive two-year international curriculum are well prepared for post secondary education and are routinely accepted to top colleges and universities throughout the world.

Requirements
Diploma candidates must complete course work in six subject areas and pass exams in each. They must also take a course called Theory of Knowledge, write a research paper based on the study of an original problem, and complete an extracurricular requirement in the arts, service, and athletics. The IB emphasis on critical thinking, depth of learning, research, and writing skills underscores what is already occurring across the disciplines in Upper School. Most IB courses are taught in conjunction with existing Advancement Placement, Honors, and regular courses.

The IB program offers committed students who are organized, who manage time well, and who are serious about learning, the opportunity to earn this internationally recognized diploma in addition to their Country Day diploma.
