International Baccalaureate (IB) School
Charlotte Country Day School is proud to be the first school in North Carolina selected as an International Baccalaureate (IB) school, offering high quality programs of international education. Country Day became a certified IB school offering the Diploma Programme for Upper School students in 1992 and the Primary Years Programme for Lower School students in 2005. There are nearly 2,400 authorized IB schools in 128 countries.
What is the Diploma Programme?
The International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme is designed to establish a basic standard for international education and focuses on educating the "whole person." The curriculum provides juniors and seniors with a balanced education, promotes geographical and cultural mobility, and emphasizes international understanding through shared academic experiences.
Students who successfully complete this comprehensive two-year international curriculum are well prepared for post secondary education and are routinely accepted to top colleges and universities throughout the world. The IB emphasis on critical thinking, depth of learning, research, and writing skills underscores what is already occurring across the disciplines in Upper School. Most IB courses are taught in conjunction with existing Advancement Placement, Honors, and regular courses.
The IB program offers committed students who are organized, who manage time well, and who are serious about learning, the opportunity to earn this internationally recognized diploma in addition to their Country Day diploma. For questions or additional information about the Diploma Programme, please e-mail the IB Coordinator.
What is the Primary Years Programme?
Charlotte Country Day's Lower School offers the IB Primary Years Programme (IBPYP) for all students, junior kindergarten through fourth grade. The PYP is a transdisciplinary program of international education that focuses on the development of the whole child by addressing the academic, social, physical, emotional, and cultural needs of the students.
The PYP promotes the construction of knowledge, guided inquiry as a vehicle for learning, and international-mindedness. In addition, it creates a concept-driven program that balances the transdisciplinary program of inquiry with traditional disciplines.
